Basic Recipe for Soft Dinner Turnovers

This week, I am going to share with you three versions of one of my favorite dishes, plus the basic recipe, so you can make your own version. This dish is like turnovers, only the filling is wrapped in a soft, fluffy dough instead of a crispy crust. These hand pies are perfect for picnics, as they are easy to transport and can be eaten at room temperature. However, I prefer them while they are still hot out of the oven! Yum!

Pineapple Pudding Bars

Here is the recipe for the pineapple pudding bars I promised yesterday. The bars are utterly delicious -- I promise. I just wish I had some more of the them! :D They are firm enough to be packed in layers in a box and brought for picnics or field days --- and firm enough to be eaten out of hand. They are also low in sugar, and if you want to cut down on the fat, you can make them without the crust and just serve them as pudding; I think

Oil-Based Sweet Tart Crust (Pate Brisee)

When trying to cook healthier food, you often find yourself wanting to substitute margarine with something healthier, something not made up of hydrogenated oils and artificial flavors. Then you pull out your recipe for pie crust or cookies, shake your head, and grab the margarine tub. At least, you say to yourself, I am not using butter.Continue reading »

How To Make Your Own Healthy Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is equal to peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches. It is inevitably linked to childhood memories of sack lunches. It is an iconic American food. BUT, the problem with most peanut butters nowadays is that they are loaded with hydrogenated oil and sugar.

How To Make Your Own Powdered Sugar

Many health geeks want to use different sugar types, such as raw sugar, turbinado sugar, evaporated cane sugar, Florida crystals, coconut sugar, etc., that are supposed to be healthier than traditional table sugar. However, most of these sugars are sold as small crystals, and sometimes you simply need powdered sugar, be it for frosting, cookies, cakes, etc.
